International Collaboration: Microrobotics Research in the Netherlands

As part of the INSPIRATION project, led by Assoc. Ph.D. Filip Šuligoj, junior researcher Jurica Cvetić and assistant Tara Knežević spent two months visiting the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands. There they were part of the Surgical Robotics Lab under the leadership of prof. Ph.D. Misre Sarthaka, where they worked on research into the control and monitoring of microrobots inside the human body.

During the stay, a complex system for precise control of microrobots using ultrasound and a robotic arm was developed. The system is based on:

• Impedance control that allows maintaining contact between the human body and the ultrasound probe with the aim of tracking the microrobot.

• Cascade neural networks that continuously segment blood vessels and recognize the microrobot in real time, providing information about its position in relation to the tip of the probe, which enables precise positioning of the robotic arm.

This international collaboration is a significant step towards more precise and safer control of microrobots in medical procedures and demonstrates the value of integrating artificial intelligence and robotic systems in the medicine of the future.

The project is funded by the European Union - NextGenerationEU.
