Podcast "Voice of HAZU": Academician Bojan Jerbić  

In the new episode of the podcast „"Voice of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts"“ the guest was Academician Bojan Jerbić, full member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and professor emeritus at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb.  

In the interview, he talks about his scientific and professional work and the role of science, technology, and education in today's society. 

Academician Jerbić is one of the leading Croatian scientists in the field robotics and artificial intelligence, with special emphasis on their application in medicine. During his rich academic career, he participated in the development of numerous research and educational projects and made a significant contribution to connecting scientific research with the real needs of society and the economy. 

In a conversation for the podcast, he looks back on his own professional path, from his early interests in technical sciences to the key research breakthroughs that marked his work. He especially emphasizes the importance curiosity, perseverance and an interdisciplinary approach, emphasizing that scientific progress does not occur in isolation, but through collaboration between different fields and professions. 

A significant part of the conversation is dedicated to the development medical robotics, an area in which academician Jerbić achieved internationally recognized results. As one of the initiators and leaders of the project RONNA, the first Croatian robotic system for assisting in neurosurgery, discusses the challenges of applying advanced technologies in a sensitive medical environment, as well as the importance of safety, precision and ethical standards in such systems. The podcast also presents examples of the application of robotic technologies in clinical practice, further emphasizing the connection between scientific research and the real needs of the healthcare system. 

Academician Jerbić also comments development of artificial intelligence and its increasing influence on different parts of society. It emphasizes that technology in itself is neither good nor bad – its value depends on how we use it.  

It especially highlights responsibility of scientists and engineers, but also the importance of educational institutions in shaping young people who will be able to think critically and responsibly apply new technologies. 

Speaking about education, he points out that Investing in knowledge is the foundation of long-term development of society. Quality higher education, encouraging research and creating an environment in which young scientists can develop their ideas are key to the future. In this context, he specifically mentions the role of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts as an institution that brings together top experts and actively participates in public debate on important social issues. 

The goal of the podcast is to bring the work and thoughts of Academy members closer to the general public and stimulate interest in scientific and social topics of long-term importance.
