Our PhD candidates Ines Frajtag and Roč Stilinović, junior researcher Luka Šiktar, together with Filip Šuligoj and Marko Švaco, participated in 34th International Conference on Robotics in Alpe-Adria-Danube Region (RAAD). The event took place at the Palace of Science in Belgrade, Serbia.
The scientific program included a series of top-notch lectures and discussions. Among the most notable were three plenary lectures given by world-renowned experts: Dr. Arash Ajoudani, Dr. Alin Albu-Schäffer and Dr. Katja Mombaur, as well as two introductory lectures given by prominent Serbian scientists, Dr. Zoran Obradović and Dr. Strahinja Došen.
RAAD is a three-day conference that has been held annually since 1992 with the aim of bringing together experts in the field of robotics and its applications. This year it was held in Belgrade, a city at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers — also known as the birthplace of the world's first functional active exoskeleton and the first model of a multifunctional external energy-powered prosthetic hand, known in professional literature as the "Belgrade Prosthetic Hand". The venue of the conference was the Palace of Science, located in the center of Belgrade, which includes modernly equipped laboratories, lecture halls and conference halls and represents a center for research, innovation and academic cooperation. The main chairman of this year's conference was Dr. Kosta Jovanović, and the co-chairs were Dr. Aleksandar Rodić and Dr. Mirko Raković. Thanks to the high reputation of RAAD within the international robotics community, this year's conference included 12 thematic sections, with a total of 79 papers presented by researchers and lecturers from 22 different countries.
During the conference, our team members had the opportunity not only to participate in the scientific program, but also to explore the city and experience Serbian culture through various social events organized by the hosts. Participants also had the opportunity to see robots and equipment presented by this year's conference sponsors, including Bosch, Fanuc, Festo, KUKA, MBT, Synapticon, Yandex, ABB and Renex.
One of our featured works, "Autonomous UAV Navigation for Search and Rescue Missions Using Computer Vision and Convolutional Neural Networks”, was a finalist for the award for best paper in the application category!
We look forward to next year's edition of the conference, which will be held in Bratislava, Slovakia!
