Intelligent data models for the production and recycling of battery cells
As the automotive industry undergoes a major transformation towards electromobility, the high-voltage battery, containing battery cells, has become a key component of electric vehicle technology. In a significant leap forward, the BMW Group is introducing newly developed cylindrical battery cells in its 'Neue Klasse' models, delivering a technical breakthrough with substantial improvements in energy density, charging speed, and overall range. Battery cell production is one of the greatest cost factors of the battery, so it is crucial to minimize the production cost while still achieving the best possible battery performance.
The goal of the INSIGHT project is to develop artificial intelligence-based models that will improve quality, reduce costs, and accelerate the production process through their application. Data collection takes place in three BMW Group competence centers: the Battery Cell Competence Center (BCCC), which focuses on research and development of new cell technologies; the Cell Manufacturing Competence Center (CMCC), where series production is tested on a pilot line; and the Battery Cell Recycling Competence Center (CRCC), which focuses on the recycling process of battery cells and is currently in the start-up phase. The main tasks of this collaborative project are data collection and preparation, the development of predictive models, and their automation and implementation in production.
